Will Wright

He played a lot of grumpy old men.

Will Wright was a prolific American character actor, known for his distinctive appearance and nasal voice, which he used to great effect in a wide array of supporting roles in film, radio, and television throughout the mid-20th century. Born William Henry Wright on March 26, 1894, in San Francisco, California, he began his career not in acting, but in journalism. Before he turned to performance, Wright worked as a newspaper reporter and editor, a profession that helped hone his understanding of storytelling and dialogue—skills

he would later employ to great success on stage and screen. Wright’s formal education is not widely documented, but his early career in journalism suggests a strong command of language and an intellectual curiosity that likely influenced his move into radio.

During the 1920s and 1930s, he transitioned into radio acting, becoming a prominent voice in programs such as The Jack Benny Program, Gunsmoke, and Dragnet. His skill as a voice actor opened the door to film roles, and he began appearing in movies in the late 1930s. He specialized in playing crusty old men, shopkeepers, bankers, and judges, often with a cantankerous or sardonic edge, making him a familiar and memorable presence even in small roles.

Wright’s film career took off in the 1940s, with credits in such notable productions as Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948), All the King’s Men (1949), and Shadow of the Thin Man (1941). As the film industry evolved, he smoothly transitioned into television during the 1950s and 1960s,

becoming a regular guest star in shows like The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Perry Mason, The Andy Griffith Show, and Bonanza. He also portrayed Ben Weaver, the Scrooge-like department store owner, in the holiday episode “The Christmas Story” on The Andy Griffith Show, a role that made a lasting impression among fans of classic television.

Despite his frequent appearances, Wright remained a bachelor for life and kept his personal affairs largely private. There is no public record of any marriage or children, and little is known about his social circles or hobbies outside of acting. He was admired by peers for his professionalism and reliability,

often brought in to lend weight to a scene or a program with his trademark gruff demeanor and world-weary charm. Wright continued working until his death from cancer on June 19, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 68. He was cremated and his remains were interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale.

His legacy survives in the hundreds of performances he left behind, many of which continue to be seen in reruns of classic radio and television programs. A bit of trivia: Will Wright was one of the first actors to portray a live-action Scrooge-like character on American television, years before such portrayals became a seasonal staple.

Though never the recipient of major acting awards, Wright’s consistent output and memorable character work made him one of the unsung heroes of Hollywood’s golden age of supporting actors. His face and voice, while rarely top-billed, remain etched into the collective memory of generations raised on mid-century American entertainment.
