The Shadow of the Cat (1961)

I watched this 1961 Universal International , B.H.P. Films Presentation, of “The Shadow of the Cat” on Svengoolie. It is a British horror film filmed at Bray Studios, England, and directed by John Gilling (Hammer Horror films, The Gamma People, High Flight, The Night Caller, The Plague of the Zombies, The Reptile, The Mummy’s Shroud). It was written by George Baxt and produced by Jon Penington. It is about a wealthy, elderly lady is murdered and the only witness is Tabitha, her cat and star of the movie, who now is tormenting the murderers who want her dead too.

The victim is Ella Venable played by Catherine Lacey (The Lady Vanishes, The Mummy’s Shroud, The Sorcerers) and Tabitha is played by Bunkie. The other stars are André Morell (The Bridge on the River Kwai, Dr. Watson in The Hound of the Baskervilles, Ben-Hur, The Plague of the Zombies, The Mummy’s Shroud, Lord Elrond’s voice in the animated Lord of the Rings),

Barbara Shelley (The Cat Girl, Blood of the Vampire, Village of the Damned, The Gorgon, Dracula Prince of Darkness, Quatermass and the Pit, Ghost Story), William Lucas (Tower of Evil, TV like The Prisoner, The Avengers, Dr. Who), Freda Jackson (Great Expectations, The Brides of Dracula, Die Monster Die, Clash of the Titans), Conrad Phillips (played William Tell in the Adventures of William Tell TV series, was in an episode of Fawlty Towers),

Richard Warner (The Strange World of Planet X, Village of the Damned, The Mummy’s Shroud), Vanda Godsell (Horrors of the Black Museum, Konga, A Shot in the Dark, The Earth Dies Screaming, The Pink Panther Strikes Again),

Alan Wheatley (the first person to be killed by a Dalek in a Dr. Who episode, Sheriff of Nottingham in the Adventures of Robin Hood TV Series, Spaceways), Andrew Crawford (Julius Caesar), and

Kynaston Reeves (English character actor who appeared in numerous films and many television plays and series). The music was composed and conducted by Mikis Theodorakis (Serpico).

They use a “Blurry Cat Vision” so we know it is what Tabitha is seeing which I thought it was a good effect. The movie is very good and I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars. For more information read Wikipedia, IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes.
