Fast Food Nutrition

[ noo-trish-uhn ] noun
the act or process of nourishing or of being nourished.

Kind of an oxymoron, fast food, and nutrition. I have always wondered, on those rare occasions I eat fast food, which ones are better (or worse) for me. I have diabetes so I am especially cognizant of the sugar and carbohydrates included in my meal.

I try to lay off the french fries, sometimes opting for a side salad or just getting an extra, or larger, burger. I don’t drink many sodas either, mostly water, so sometimes I’ll treat myself to a Zero Sugar drink when I do eat out. This will add 100 mg of sodium to my meal. I’ll give a cost for everything below including this large drink.

If I go to the Krystal, I would get 5 famous Krystal burgers, no cheese. I love the way they taste with the pickles and grilled onions. This will run about 650 calories, 30g fat, 10g saturated fat, 5g sugar, 75g carbs, and 1500mg sodium. The cost will be $5.94 + Tax.

At Arby’s, I usually get two Classic Beef ‘N Cheddar. I love the cheddar sauce and the onion roll. These together are 900 calories, 42g fat, 40g saturated fat, 18 grams sugar, 90g carbs, and 2560mg sodium. The cost of this meal will be $9.97 + tax.

When I eat at McDonald’s I will sometimes get the Double Quarter Pounder with cheese. This will be about 740 calories, 42g fat, 20g saturated fat, 10g sugar, 43g carbs, and 1360mg sodium. The cost will be $7.39 + Tax.

At Burger King, I get the Double Whopper with cheese. I love the flame-grilled taste. It has 980 calories, 64g fat, 24g saturated fat, 11g sugar, 50 carbs, and 1410mg of sodium. This will cost $8.68 + Tax.

I love Taco Bell. I get 2 crunchy tacos and a Burrito Supreme. This combo has 730 calories, 25g fat, 13g saturated fat, 6g sugar, 75g carbs, and 1720mg of sodium. The cost is $7.56 +Tax.

The Varsity is a little harder for me to get to but if I’m near it is my number 1 choice. I splurge here and get 2 chili dogs and an onion ring. This combo has 870 calories, 68g fat, 20 grams saturated fat, 0g sugar, 40 carbs, and 1800mg sodium. The cost is $7.99 + Tax.

At Chick-Fil-A, you can’t go wrong with 2 Chick-Fil-A sandwiches. This meal has 880 calories, 34g fat, 8 grams of saturated fat, 12 grams of sugar, 82g carbs, and 2800mg of salt. The cost will be $10.83 + Tax.

At Wendy’s, I’ll go for a Dave’s Double Cheeseburger. This has 810 calories, 51 grams of fat, 20g of saturated fat, 8g of sugar, 39g of carbs, and 1190mg sodium. The cost for this will be $7.38 +tax.

The price at Chick-Fil-A, although delicious, is the highest, 86 cents more than Arby’s. The lowest price was the Krystal which is $1.44 less than 2nd place Wendy’s. Real close to second place were McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and The Varsity.

But how does the lowest-priced Krystal compare in nutrition? It is the best as far as total calories go at 650. Taco Bell comes in second place at 730. The worst in calories was Burger king at 980.

The best in fat content was Taco Bell at 25g. Krystal came in at 30 and Chick-Fil-A at 34. The worst was The Varsity at 68g. For saturated fat, the winner was Chick-Fil-A at 8g. Krystal and The Varsity came in at 10g. The worst was Arby’s at 40g.

For sugar content, the best was The Varsity at 0g with Krystal at 5g and Taco Bell at 6g. The worst was Arby’s at 18g. Carbohydrates were the lowest at Wendy’s. Burger King came in a 40g and McDonald’s at 43g.

How about the sodium? It looks like Wendy’s is the winner at 1190mg. Mcdonald’s come in second at 1360mg and Burger King third at 1410mg. The worst was Chick-Fil-A at 2800mg.

So the winner is …. a hard call. I believe due to the low cost, the lowest calories, and not bad in all but carbs, I’m giving it to Krystal.

Second place goes to Taco Bell, McDonald’s, and surprisingly The Varsity. The worst was Arby’s, Chick-Fil-A, and Burger King. Wendy’s came in the middle.
