Song Meanings: What Does Pompatus of Love Mean?

Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah, Some call me the gangster of love, Some people call me Maurice, ‘Cause I speak of the pompatus of love

Steve Miller wrote about the pompatus of love in his song “The Joker” from his eighth studio album The Joker (1973). The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1974. It is one of two Steve Miller Band songs that feature the nonce word “pompatus”. A nonce word is a term coined for a specific occasion or purpose,

often created to fulfill a unique linguistic need or to convey a particular concept in a specific context. These words are typically coined spontaneously and may not become widely adopted in the language. The term “nonce” in this context originates from the Middle English word “noncense,” meaning “for the nonce” or “for the occasion.”

Nonce words are essentially new words that serve a temporary or situational function, distinguishing them from more established words in the lexicon. While nonce words may capture a momentary need for expression, their usage is often confined to specific situations and may not persist over time. The creation of nonce words is a testament to the dynamic and flexible nature of language,

allowing speakers to adapt and innovate as communication needs arise. The first line of the lyrics is a reference to the song “Space Cowboy” from Miller’s Brave New World album. The following lines refer to two other songs: “Gangster of Love” from Sailor and “Enter Maurice” from Recall the Beginning…A Journey from Eden.

“Gangster of Love” is a blues song recorded by Johnny “Guitar” Watson in 1957 and covered by Steve Miller.

The line “some people call me Maurice / ‘Cause I speak of the pompatus of love” was written after Miller heard the song “The Letter” by the Medallions. In “The Letter”, writer Vernon Green made up the word puppetutes, meaning a paper-doll erotic fantasy figure; however, Miller misheard the word and wrote pompatus instead.

The Letter - The Medallions (excerpt)

Let me whisper sweet words of pizmotality
And discuss the puppetutes of love
And put 'em together, and what've you have
Matrimony, oh my darling, please hear my plea
The Joker written by Steve Miller

Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah
Some call me the gangster of love
Some people call me Maurice
'Cause I speak of the pompatus of love

People talk about me, baby
Say I'm doing you wrong, doing you wrong
Well, don't you worry, baby, don't worry
'Cause I'm right here, right here, right here, right here at home

'Cause I'm a picker, I'm a grinner
I'm a lover and I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun
I'm a joker, I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
I sure don't want to hurt no one
I'm a picker, I'm a grinner
I'm a lover and I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun
I'm a joker, I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
I get my lovin' on the run
Woo-ooh, woo-ooh

You're the cutest thing that I ever did see
I really love your peaches, wanna shake your tree
Lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey all the time
Oee, baby, I'll sure show you a good time

'Cause I'm a picker, I'm a grinner
I'm a lover and I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun
I'm a joker, I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
I get my lovin' on the run
I'm a picker, I'm a grinner
I'm a lover and I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun
I'm a joker, I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
I sure don't want to hurt no one

Woo-ooh, woo-ooh

People keep talking about me, baby
Say I'm doing you wrong
Well, don't you worry, don't worry, no, don't worry, mama
'Cause I'm right here at home
You're the cutest thing I ever did see
Really love your peaches, wanna shake your tree
Lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey all the time
C'mon baby, now I'll show you a good time
