Binary Numbers and the Rendlesham Forest Incident

Binary numbers are a fundamental concept in computer science and digital electronics, serving as the foundation for representing and processing information in the form of 0s and 1s. The history of binary numbers dates back to ancient civilizations, where various cultures,

such as the Chinese and the I Ching system[1], used binary-like arrangements for divination purposes. However, the formalization and widespread adoption of binary numbers in modern computing can be attributed to the pioneering work of mathematicians and engineers in the mid-20th century.

One of the key figures in the development of binary systems is the German mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. In the late 17th century, Leibniz proposed a binary numeral system in a letter to the French mathematician and philosopher, Joachim Bouvet.

Leibniz’s binary system was based on the idea that all mathematical concepts could be expressed using only the digits 0 and 1, making it a binary system. Although Leibniz’s binary system wasn’t immediately adopted, it laid the conceptual groundwork for later developments in digital computing. The true realization of the power and efficiency of binary representation came with the advent of electronic computers in the mid-20th century.

Engineers and computer scientists recognized that electronic components could easily represent two states (off and on, or 0 and 1), making binary an ideal choice for encoding information in digital systems. The binary system forms the basis for the binary code used in computers,

where each binary digit, or bit, represents a basic unit of information. Binary calculations are performed using the binary number system, where numbers are represented using only the digits 0 and 1.

Addition and subtraction in binary follow similar principles to those in the decimal system, but with simpler carry-over rules due to the limited digit set. Multiplication and division in binary involve a series of shifting and addition operations. Binary arithmetic lays the groundwork for various computational operations in computer systems. Understanding binary is crucial in computer science, digital electronics, and information technology, as it is the fundamental language of computers. As technology continues to advance, the importance of binary representation remains at the core of digital systems.


Rendlesham Forest Incident

The Rendlesham Forest Incident, often referred to as “Britain’s Roswell,” occurred in December 1980 near the RAF Woodbridge military base[2] in Suffolk, England. Over a series of nights, military personnel reported witnessing strange lights and encountering a mysterious object in the Rendlesham Forest.

The incident gained notoriety due to the involvement of US Air Force personnel stationed at the base. Witnesses claimed to have seen a triangular-shaped object with bright lights, touched a metallic surface, and observed hieroglyphic-like markings. The incident remains a subject of debate and speculation, with some suggesting it was a misinterpretation of mundane phenomena or military exercises.

James (Jim) W. Penniston, USAF, Ret. approached the craft where he observed hieroglyphic-like markings, symbols that measured about 3 inches high and two and a half feet across, and waved his hand over them. In his mind, at that moment, he imagined a series of 1’s and 0’s, which he wrote in his notebook. Penniston held key assignments throughout the world.

Including service in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He wrote defense, security, counter-terrorism, and contingency plans for the USAF and NATO. Additionally, he provided security support for Air Force One, and other classified aircraft weapon systems. Penniston held for the majority of his twenty year career, a U.S. TOP SECRET/BI/SCI and a NATO TOP SECRET COSMIC/ATOMAL security clearance.

In 1980, I was assigned to the largest Tactical Fighter Wing in the Air Force, RAF Woodbridge in England. I was the senior security officer in charge of base security. At that time I held a top-secret US and NATO security clearance and was responsible for the protection of war-making resources for that base. Shortly after midnight on the 26th of December, 1980, Staff Sergeant Steffens briefed me that some lights were seen in Rendlesham Forest, just outside the base. He informed me that what ever it was didn’t crash…it landed. I discounted what he said and reported to the control center back at the base that we had a possible downed aircraft. I then ordered Amn. Cabanzak, AIC Burroughs to respond with me.

After roughly 45 minutes the light from the craft began to intensify. Burroughs and I then took a defensive position away from the craft as it lifted off the ground without any noise or air disturbance. It maneuvered through the trees and shot off at an unbelievable rate of speed. It was gone in the blink of an eye.
In my logbook, (that I have right here) I wrote, Speed: IMPOSSIBLE. Over 80 Air Force Personnel, all trained observers assigned to the 81st Security Police Squadron, witnessed the takeoff.
