What is a Bacon Explosion?

The origins of the Bacon Explosion can be traced back to a barbecue blog.

The Bacon Explosion is a savory culinary creation that gained popularity in the barbecue and grilling community. This indulgent dish is essentially a woven lattice of bacon that encases a filling of seasoned sausage, creating a smoky and flavorful explosion of meaty goodness when cooked.

The origins of the Bacon Explosion can be traced back to a barbecue blog called “BBQ Addicts,” run by Jason Day and Aaron Chronister. In December 2008, they posted a step-by-step guide to creating this extravagant dish, and it quickly captured the attention of food enthusiasts around the world.

The history of the Bacon Explosion is rooted in the American barbecue culture, known for its love of smoked meats and inventive recipes. The dish gained widespread attention after being featured in various online forums, food blogs, and social media platforms.

Its popularity soared, leading to countless variations and adaptations by home cooks and professional chefs alike. The recipe for the Bacon Explosion is relatively simple but results in a visually stunning and flavorful dish. To make it, you start by weaving a lattice of bacon strips,

creating a mat-like structure. A seasoned sausage mixture is then spread evenly over the bacon lattice, and additional ingredients like barbecue sauce, cheese, or other flavor enhancers can be added. The bacon lattice is then rolled around the sausage filling, creating a log-like shape.

The entire creation is then smoked or grilled until the bacon becomes crispy, and the sausage is fully cooked. Here’s a basic recipe for the Bacon Explosion:

  • Serves: 6 – 12 (depends on the thickness of your slices)
  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 2.5 – 3 hours (or internal temperature 165F)
  • Indirect Heat: 225F – 250F

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds of bacon strips
  • 2 pounds of ground sausage
  • Barbecue rub or seasoning of your choice
  • Barbecue sauce (optional)

Instructions

  • Create a bacon lattice by weaving the strips together.
  • Season the ground sausage with barbecue rub or your preferred seasoning.
  • Spread the seasoned sausage evenly over the bacon lattice.
  • Optional: Drizzle barbecue sauce over the sausage layer.
  • Carefully roll the bacon lattice and sausage into a log shape.
  • Place the Bacon Explosion on a grill or in a smoker, and cook until the bacon is crispy and the sausage is fully cooked.

You can also cook it in the oven for 1 hour, basting every 15 minutes. There are lots of recipes out there or you can just create your own ingredient combinations. I think a cheese center would be delicious.
