
With school, around here, just out for the summer, it got me thinking about songs about school. I decided to list some of my favorites here. There are songs here for them, whether they are just beginning, starting a new grade, beginning High School/College, or graduating. Enjoy part one.
Me and Julio Down by the Old Schoolyard
– Paul Simon

My Old School – Steely Dan

Written by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the song reflects on their time at Bard College, where they were involved in a drug bust. The lyrics mention an incident involving “Daddy Gee,” referring to G. Gordon Liddy,

who was the local prosecutor before becoming famous for his role in the Watergate scandal. The upbeat track features a prominent horn section and catchy guitar riffs, capturing a nostalgic yet rebellious sentiment. “My Old School” reached No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has since become a fan favorite for its clever storytelling and distinctive sound.
“Teacher, I Need You” – Elton John

“Teacher, I Need You,” a song by Elton John from his 1973 album Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player, portrays the infatuation of a young student with his teacher. The lyrics, written by Bernie Taupin, capture the youthful longing and admiration felt by the protagonist, creating a nostalgic and playful narrative.

Though not released as a single in the US or UK, the song contributed to the overall success of the album, which reached number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The song has been described as a “retro rocker” and its sound evokes the music of the 1950s and early 1960s. The track showcases Elton John’s ability to blend catchy melodies with evocative storytelling.
When I Kissed the Teacher – ABBA

“When I Kissed the Teacher,” a song by ABBA from their 1976 album Arrival, tells the story of a student who impulsively kisses her teacher, capturing the innocence and excitement of a schoolgirl crush. The upbeat melody and playful lyrics highlight ABBA’s knack for storytelling through pop music.
Agnetha Fältskog is the lead vocal.

Although the song was not released as a single, Arrival became one of ABBA’s most successful albums, reaching number 1 on the charts in several countries, including the UK and Sweden. The song remains a fan favorite for its catchy tune and whimsical narrative.
Hey School Boy – Stefy

“Hey School Boy,” a song by Stefy from their 2006 debut album The Orange Album, features playful and flirtatious lyrics where the protagonist expresses her interest in a younger, school-aged boy. The song blends pop and electronic elements, characteristic of Stefy’s sound. Although “Hey School Boy” was not released as a major single and did not chart,

The Orange Album helped the band gain a following for its catchy hooks and energetic style. The album received modest attention, and “Hey School Boy” stands out as a fun, light-hearted track in their discography. Two music videos were created for the song in late 2006.
School’s Out – Alice Cooper

“School’s Out,” a song by Alice Cooper released in 1972, became an anthem for students celebrating the end of the school year. The track captures the rebellious spirit and joy of youth freed from academic responsibilities. Its lyrics reflect the excitement and liberation felt when school is dismissed for summer.

The song achieved significant commercial success, reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and topping the UK Singles Chart. It remains one of Cooper’s most iconic songs, embodying the carefree and defiant attitude of rock music in the early 1970s .
There’s two times during the year. One is Christmas morning, when you’re just getting ready to open the presents. The greed factor is right there. The next one is the last three minutes of the last day of school when you’re sitting there and it’s like a slow fuse burning. I said, ‘If we can catch that three minutes in a song, it’s going to be so big.
