Tony Todd was an accomplished American actor, voice actor, and film producer, best known for his distinctive deep voice and commanding presence on screen. Born on December 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C., Todd was raised in a family that valued the arts. His mother, a former model,

and his father, a veteran of the U.S. Army, instilled in him a love for performance from an early age. Todd’s early life was marked by a passion for acting, which he pursued through high school and later at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he earned a degree in drama. Todd’s career began in the theater, where he honed his craft in various productions. He made his film debut in the 1986 movie “Platoon,” directed by Oliver Stone, which showcased his talent and opened doors for future roles.

However, it was his portrayal of the titular character in the horror film “Candyman” (1992) that solidified his status as a horror icon. The film, based on Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden,” became a cult classic and is often credited with revitalizing the horror genre in the early ’90s.

You gotta have audience sympathy for the character in some way or another. There’s gotta be something attractive about the character that makes people want to root for them but at the same time feel repulsed by the idea. And for me personally, for every film that I do, I create a backstory for all my tortured people and my heroes alike.
