Brian Wilson was born on Sunday, June 20, 1942, in Inglewood, California, growing up in Hawthorne alongside his brothers Carl and Dennis. Brian was the first child of Audree Neva (née Korthof) and Murry Wilson, a machinist who later pursued songwriting part-time. From a young age, he displayed precocious musical talent—learning piano, crafting vocal harmonies, and teaching his siblings to sing.
From an early age, Wilson exhibited an aptitude for learning by ear. His father remembered how, after hearing only a few verses of “When the Caissons Go Rolling Along”, the infant Wilson was able to reproduce its melody. Murry was a driving force in cultivating his children’s musical talents.

The Beach Boys formed in 1961 with Brian, his brothers, cousin Mike Love, and Al Jardine. Their breakthrough hit “Surfin’” was released that year, and Brian quickly emerged as the group’s visionary songwriter, producer, and arranger. Though his early public education included Hawthorne High School, his true schooling happened in the studio.

Brian Wilson’s musical influences were vast and eclectic, shaping his visionary approach to songwriting and production. As a child, he was captivated by the complex harmonies of The Four Freshmen, whose jazz vocal arrangements deeply impacted his sense of melody and layering. He also admired the rhythmic excitement of Chuck Berry and Little Richard, whose rock ‘n’ roll energy would inform early Beach Boys hits.

Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” technique was a major influence, inspiring Wilson to push studio boundaries and create lush, multi-layered productions like Pet Sounds. Classical composers such as George Gershwin and J.S. Bach also guided his harmonic experimentation, as did contemporaries like The Beatles, with whom he shared a spirit of creative rivalry—particularly during the mid-1960s.

These varied inspirations allowed Wilson to blend surf rock, pop, jazz, and orchestral textures into something truly original, redefining the possibilities of popular music.

By the mid‑1960s, Brian had experienced a nervous breakdown on tour and retreated from live performances to focus on recording, creating the landmark album Pet Sounds (1966)—praised by Paul McCartney and later ranked No. 2 by Rolling Stone among rock’s greatest records.

However, success was shadowed by struggle. Brian battled addiction, childhood trauma from an abusive father, and severe mental illness—eventually diagnosed as schizoaffective disorder, accompanied by auditory hallucinations. In the late 1970s and 1980s, therapeutic intervention with Dr. Eugene Landy saved him from despair but led to unethical control over his life until a court intervened in 1992.

Despite the turmoil, Brian staged celebrated comebacks. He recorded the long-shelved Smile project, releasing Brian Wilson Presents Smile in 2004 and earning a Grammy. His solo touring spanned from 1999 until 2022, including a triumphant 50th‑anniversary Pet Sounds world tour.

Brian Wilson’s relationship with the Wondermints began in the late 1990s, when the Los Angeles-based power pop band became the core of his new live backing group. Handpicked for their encyclopedic knowledge of Beach Boys music and their exceptional vocal and instrumental abilities, the Wondermints—including Darian Sahanaja, Probyn Gregory, and Nick Walusko—helped Wilson return to the stage after decades of avoiding live performance. Their precision and deep respect for Wilson’s work allowed for faithful recreations of his intricate arrangements, particularly on tours featuring Pet Sounds and later Smile. The partnership revitalized Wilson’s career, earning widespread critical acclaim and making it possible for him to present his most ambitious music to live audiences for the first time. The Wondermints not only supported Wilson musically but also played a key role in helping him reconnect with his legacy and fans.

On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Brian Wilson passed away at the age of 82, after living with dementia and under conservatorship following the death of his second wife, Melinda, in early 2024. The family statement—shared via Instagram and his official site—read, “We are at a loss for words right now… Please respect our privacy… Love & Mercy”.

Brian is survived by seven children—two with first wife Marilyn Rovell (Carnie and Wendy, famous as Wilson Phillips) and five with Melinda Ledbetter—as well as grandchildren, his enduring musical legacy, and countless fans worldwide.
Brian Wilson, my friend, my classmate, my football teammate, my Beach Boy bandmate and my brother in spirit, I will always feel blessed that you were in our lives for as long as you were. I think the most comforting thought right now is that you are reunited with Carl and Dennis, singing those beautiful harmonies again. You were a humble giant who always made me laugh and we will celebrate your music forever. Brian, I’ll really miss you…still I have the warmth of the sun within me tonight.
Al Jardine
Heartbroken to hear about the passing of my friend. His legacy and talent come around only once in a lifetime … Brian’s passing is a great loss for the music community, and I’m honored to have known him.
Stephen Bishop

His life was a tapestry of inspired creativity and profound personal challenge, but above all, he leaves behind music that captured the spirit of California youth and reshaped popular culture.

His cherished music will live forever as he travels through the Universe and beyond. God bless you, sweet Brian. One of the biggest thrills of my life was singing “California Girls” with Brian.

American Mozart. Anyone who really knows me, knows how heart broken I am about Brian Wilson passing … A one of a kind genius from another world.

The maestro has passed. Brian was a raw open heart with two legs — and an ear that heard the angels — quite literally,” the actor continued. “He was touched. To see him so happy with his wife Melinda — finally talking about and performing his unfinished masterpiece Smile (after the release of the astounding Smile sessions) — [and] to hear him be so open about the depth of his struggles so that the telling of his story might help others and take away the stigma of mental health was to see a triumph of endurance and spirit, love and mercy.
John Cusack — who portrayed Wilson in the 2014 film Love & Mercy
I have no words to express the sadness I feel right now. My father @brianwilsonlive was every fiber of my body. He will be remembered by millions and millions until the world ends. I am lucky to have been his daughter and had a soul connection with him that will live on always. I’ve never felt this kind of pain before, but I know he’s resting up there in heaven… or maybe playing the piano for Grandma Audree, his mom. I will post something else soon, but this is all my hands will let me type. I love you, daddy….I miss you so much already.
