In these posts I’ll explore some music that deals with our comic book heroes. I’ll list some of my favorites about superheroes who arrive in the nick of time and save the day. Some of these are about our Marvel and DC idols while others about some less well-known heroes. There are songs about Superman, Spiderman, the Hulk, Iron Man, Magneto, Titanium Man, Flash Gordon, Batman and Robin, the Greatest American Hero, Dragonfly, and many more.

When I was 11 years old, I would go to Alpha Drugs in downtown Alpharetta, Georgia. They had a comic book section, just as you walked in the front door. One of my favorites was “Everything’s Archie” comic book, it even had a picture of Archie’s rock band on each cover. A lot of the stories had to do with the band, music, and dancing which fit in with Archie’s albums that were being released in this period. It was, of course, published by Archie Comics, from 1969 to 1991. It also was in conjunction with the Archie TV cartoon series that was on Saturday mornings.

I watched the DC Comics 2015 animated movie Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts on Netflix DVD. Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin, has just built the tallest building in Gotham City, taller than Wayne Enterprises. Oswald (first appearing in comics in 1941) is a man of good taste, very rich, wears a top hat and a monocle, always carrying the umbrella and dressed in black and white. His laugh sounds like a penguin, always teased and made fun of growing up, is the villain you tend to feel bad for.
I just finished all 7 seasons of Comic Book Men an Amazon Prime video. It was an AMC television show, podcast, starring Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II, Tusk) and his employees of Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. This is a Stranger Things one-shot comic from Dark Horse Comics called Halloween Special. It was released October 21, 2020, written by Michael Moreci, art by Todor Hristov, colors by Chris O’Halloran, letters by Nate Piekos of Blambot and the cover by Fransesco Francavilla.
The story finds Mike, Dustin, Lucas and Will around a campfire telling scary stories. The comic asks “stories can’t hurt you, can they?” A fan of the show is going to enjoy this comic, I could hear the voices of the TV characters as I read. The comic is drawn well, very spooky and the cover is excellent. It is pretty short, 22 pages, and suggested for ages 14+, for language and scariness, and I enjoyed it and will give it 3 out of 5 stars.
