Covers – Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

Voices singing, let’s be jolly, Deck the halls with boughs of holly

“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was penned by Johnny Marks, a prolific songwriter renowned for his contributions to the Christmas music genre.

Marks wrote several other holiday classics, including “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “A Holly Jolly Christmas.” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was recorded by Brenda Lee in 1958 when she was just 13 years old, making her one of the youngest successful female artists of her time.

Brenda Lee, born Brenda Mae Tarpley on December 11, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia, began her musical journey at a young age. Often referred to as “Little Miss Dynamite” due to her powerful voice and petite stature, Lee rose to prominence in the late 1950s and became a chart-topping sensation.

Her career spanned various genres, including country, pop, and rockabilly, and she remains one of the most successful female artists in the history of popular music. Upon its release, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was well-received and quickly became a holiday favorite. Its timeless appeal is evident in its continued presence on radio stations, in movies, and at holiday gatherings.

The song’s catchy tune and Brenda Lee’s spirited performance have contributed to its status as a festive classic, transcending generations. On Monday, December 4, 2023, the singer’s 1958 classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” hit No. 1 on the  Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time, 65 years following its debut.

In claiming the top spot, Lee broke many records — including those held by Mariah Carey and her mega-hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” — as her hit became the third holiday No. 1 ever to be featured on the Hot 100, per a press release. This marks Lee’s third No. 1 hit in her career. She earned her first No. 1 with her 1960 single “I’m Sorry.”

I cannot believe that ‘Rockin’’ has hit No. 1 65 years after it was released, this is just so special! Thank you to the team at UMG/UMe who worked so hard to celebrate the song’s anniversary this year. But most importantly, thank you to the fans who keep listening. The song came out when I was a young teenager and now to know that it has resonated with multiple generations and continues to resonate — it is one of the best gifts I have ever received. Keep on Rockin’ and Merry Christmas!

Brenda Lee

At 78, she’s now the oldest woman to top the Hot 100, surpassing previous record-holders Cher for “Believe” when she was 52 and Carey for “All I Want for Christmas Is You” at 53.

“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” reached over one million in digital downloads by 2016 according to Nielsen SoundScan, making it fifth on the list of all-time best-selling Christmas/holiday digital singles in SoundScan history. The song has sold 1,170,000 copies in the United States as of December 2019. On November 3, 2023, the Recording Industry Association of America certified “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” 5× Platinum for US sales of 5 million copies of the digital single.

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree written by Johnny Marks

Rockin' around the Christmas tree
At the Christmas party hop
Mistletoe hung where you can see
Every couple tries to stop
Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Let the Christmas spirit ring
Later we'll have some pumpkin pie
And we'll do some caroling

You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear
Voices singing, let's be jolly
Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Have a happy holiday
Everyone dancin' merrily
In the new old-fashioned way

Oh you will get a sentimental feeling when you hear
Voices singing, let's be jolly
Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Have a happy holiday
Everyone dancin' merrily
In the new old-fashioned way
